Of the ones i watched recently i have been going more for the ones i know will have a profound emotional impact on me, so Dear Zachary and Requiem For a Dream. Both were good. Dear Zachary was incredibly amateurish in a way which almost didn’t feel plausible. But i don’t want to say that because it was by all accounts made by a real person about real people. I found it very moving all the same. Requiem for a Dream was surprising, brilliant and about as upsetting as everybody said it would be.

Red Dragon, Chinatown and The Cube were all watched a little while ago. I loved Red Dragon, though i probably had seen it before. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ralph Fiennes were the high points. Chinatown was more mainstream sleuthy than i had expected, it has aged in ways that other Polanski films haven’t but it was pleasingly twisty and turny. The Cube was very enjoyable; i haven’t watched anything so masterfully tense in a long time. I thought the individual character arches were were crafted and the sort of grizzly futility of it all was a cool kinda commentary on the contrived ‘torture horror’ genre in general -throws up on self a little bit-

What next, then? I’m thinking Winter’s Bone, Gummo or Sleepers, to stay in the upsetting vein.

120ml creme fraiche/sour cream

3 tbsp olive oil (+1 for frying purposes, optional)

2 tbsp vinegar

1 tsp mustard

3 or 4 spring onions

a handful of chives
